The Dark Knight

the dark knight, the dark knight movies

Stop what you’re doing. Put down the remote, stop clicking the mouse elsewhere, drop everything and come watch this trailer now! From Batman gearing up again in a new Batsuit, to the Joker, played perfectly by Heath Ledger, to seeing Michael Caine as Alfred again, to Detective Gordon destroying the Bat-symbol skylight. This is going to be one hell of an awesome movie next summer, so fire up this trailer up right now and enjoy!

Most of the stories featured in Legends are set in the early years of Batman’s career, though a few have been set in the present and even the future. Stories set at the beginning of Batman’s career are referred to as taking place during Year One, meaning Bruce Wayne’s first year of crime fighting as Batman. The title had been initially promoted as only doing stories from before Robin, Dick Grayson, the first Robin, did appear in issue 23, though he was still a circus performer. The title was discontinued with issue #214, in January 2007, to make way for a new Batman anthology series, Batman Confidential, which focuses on more personal events in Batman’s life (first encounters, building of new technology etc.), rather than early crime-fighting tales.

If this turns out to be true, it would be disastrous decision on the part of Warner Brothers. It’s entirely unnecessary to cut scenes from a movie just because of a few overly sensitive screening attendees. The countless fans and supporters of The Dark Knight will understand the true vision of the film and the importance of every last scene that Christopher Nolan put in. Apparently the early screening reports also claim that The Dark Knight is a more superior film than Batman Begins and that Ledger’s role is as profound (and even Oscar worthy) as originally thought. Don’t risk screwing that up Warner Brothers!

The Incredible Hulk

the incredible hulk

The Incredible Hulk is a 2008 film adaptation of the classic Marvel comic of the same name. The film is directed by Louis Leterrier, and stars Edward Norton as both the Hulk (in computer generated form) and his mild mannered alter ego, physicist Bruce Banner.

Of course, The Incredible Hulk is also getting a new feature film this summer, starring Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, William Hurt and Tim Roth. In fact, Robert Downey Jr. even shows up in the new film as “Tony Stark” (the secret identity of Iron Man, in case you didn’t know). That film hits on June 13th, and there are already plans for DVD tie-ins to the film by way of the 3rd and 4th season sets from the classic Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno live-action series. But why should that be the only series to tie in?

The Incredible Hulk is not another origin story: When the movie begins, Bruce Banner (Norton) is already The Hulk. He’s hiding out in Brazil, trying to find a cure for the gamma-ray exposure that turns him into a monster. Before long, his whereabouts are uncovered by Gen. Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), and the movie turns into an extended chase, as Banner tries to cure himself while eluding Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth), a soldier who turns into the scaly fiend Abomination. The new Hulk film is said to remain truer not only to the comic book but also to the old Lou Ferrigno TV show.

Star(s) to watch : Edward Norton (”Red Dragon”, “Primal Fear”, “Fight Club”) as Bruce Banner/Hulk, &amp Liv Tyler (”The Lord of the Rings”, “Armageddon”) as Betty Ross.

Genre : Action, Adventure, Adaptation, Sequel.

indiana jones, indiana jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull

The man in the hat is back! Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is the fourth and most daftly titled Indy movie yet, and all eyes are going to be on whether the once golden partnership between Hollywood heavyweights director Steven Spielberg and producer/writer George Lucas can turn back the clock for Ford to ensure this isn’t a film too far for the much-loved franchise.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a Lucasfilm Ltd. and is being distributed by Paramount Pictures. It will be released in the U.S. and simultaneously in most territories worldwide on Thursday, May 22, 2008. Frank Marshall returns as producer, with Kathleen Kennedy joining George Lucas as executive producer.

Indiana Jones is back at it, this time in 1957, as he plunges into the jungles of South America to find the Mystical Crystal Skull before Soviet agents. The story was written by George Lucas of the Star Wars legacy and its screenplay by David Koepp. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was also directed by Steven Spielberg. This all-star lineup should prove to be a hit. In theaters May 23, 2008.

Spider-Man 3

spiderman 3, spiderman

Spider-Man 3 is the third film in the Spider-Man film series and is scheduled to be released on May 4, 2007. The movie is directed by Sam Raimi. Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Dylan Baker, and J. K. Simmons are the confirmed returning cast members from the previous two Spider-Man movies.

So Spider-Man 3’s action is superb and its theme fairly weighty. Then why does it feel a letdown from its predecessor? Nearly all the blame rests with director Sam Raimi, who’s taken the success of some light slapstick moments in Spider-Man 2 as a cue to get even sillier.

This is another word you don?t want to see in a review. Bigger isn?t always better, this is Spider-Man, not porn. The movie feels like the producers were actually trying to make it as difficult as possible for there to be a sequel made (A big possibility, When production started on this, the license was supposed revert to Marvel & they were supposed to make Spidey 4, 5, & 6. Is this true?

Star(s) to watch : Tobey Maguire (”Cats & Dogs”) as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Topher Grace (”Ocean’s Eleven”) as Venom/Eddie Brock, James Franco (”The Wicker Man”) as New Goblin/Harry Osborn, & J. K. Simmons (”The Jackal”, “The Ladykillers”) as J Jonah Jameson.

Saw IV

saw 4

Saw IV is the fourth installment in the Saw series. The film was initially released on October 25, 2007, and in the United States on October 26, 2007. The film’s North American release date follows the series’ tradition that the films be released the Friday before or on Halloween of each year. This installment continues the story of the Jigsaw Killer, and his obsession with teaching people the value of their own lives. Although Jigsaw died in the last installment (Saw III), this film focuses on his ability to manipulate people into continuing his work. Saw IV was directed by Saw II and Saw III director Darren Lynn Bousman alongside with co-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell returning as executive producers.

Jigsaw is dead, and the film opens with his naked corpse laid out on a slab. That oughta sell some more tickets! Seriously, if you had trouble with the brain surgery sequence in Saw III, get to Saw IV 15 minutes late. A new cassette recording is found in Jigsaw’s stomach, and the games begin all over again. SWAT Commander Rigg (Lyriq Bent) is abducted and has 90 minutes to overcome the usual series of traps and save an ex-New Kid on the Block (Donnie Wahlberg). In other words, it’s exactly like the other Saw flicks.

The film opens with the autopsy of the Jigsaw Killer and the discovery of a wax-coated microcassette in his stomach, which, when played for Detective Hoffman, promises that “the games have just begun.” It then cuts to a mausoleum, where Trevor and Art are chained to a large device. Trevor’s eyelids have been sewn together, and Art’s mouth has been sewn shut, making communication between them impossible. When the device begins pulling them together, they panic, and Art murders Trevor to retrieve a key from his collar.

Star(s) to watch : Tobin Bell as Jigsaw/John.

Genre : Thriller, Sequel.

Rush Hour 3

rush hour 3, rush hour

Rush Hour 3 is a 2007 film and the third installment in the martial arts/action-comedy Rush Hour franchise starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker that began with the 1998 film Rush Hour and continued with the first sequel Rush Hour 2 in 2001. The film was officially announced on May 7, 2006, and filming began on July 4, 2006.

Action kicks off in Los Angeles with an assassination attempt on Chan’s charge, the Chinese ambassador from the first movie, who is leading a new initiative to take out the Triad criminal organization. Stuck in traffic cop duty, Tucker inserts himself into Chan’s investigation, despite their friendship being strained from an offputting incident in New York, their destination at the end of Rush Hour 2. The Triads keep after them, and they learn that Paris holds the key to stopping the gangsters, so off they go.

There is nothing new delivered by Rush Hour 3. Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker reprise their roles and pick up exactly where they left off from the previous two films. Chan’s isn’t as virile as he used to be, but one has to be impressed that this 53-year old actor can still do some amazing stunt work. Chris Tucker, however, is still just as loud and annoying as ever.

Star(s) to watch : Jackie Chan (”City Hunter”, “The Armour of God”) as Chief Inspector Lee.

Genre : Action, Adventure, Comedy, Sequel.

Hostel: Part II

hostel, hostel part 2, hostel 2

A report from Variety today quotes director and creator of the Hostel franchise Eli Roth as saying “Hostel III is all but signed.” This early news comes much before the April 5th, 2007 release of Roth’s Hostel II that just recently wrapped filming. Final decisions and more official announcements are likely to come after Hostel II’s opening weekend, where its financial success is to be determined. However it does have its loyal fans and there’s always room for more horror films! Production will likely begin after Roth finishes filming Stephen King’s The Cell sometime next year.

No, that doesn’t mean they′re negotiating with Quentin Tarantino for another. Though the advertising might lead you to believe Hostel is a Tarantino film, his name attachment is little more than a cheap marketing gimmick. Cabin Fever’s Eli Roth is the man behind the horror and Variety says he’s already in talks with LG and Screen Gems to do a Hostel 2.

Hostel 2 did not fare as well at the box office as its predecessor Hostel ($47.3 Million). The film did make a profit however, because of its low production costs and $10 Million budget.

Star(s) to watch : Bijou Phillips (”Pulse”) Whitney, Richard Burgi (”Cellular”, “Fun With Dick and Jane”) as Todd, Roger Bart (”The Stepford Wives”) as Stuart, & Jay Hernandez (”Torque”, “Joy Ride”) as Paxton.

Genre : Horror, Sequel.

fantastic four, rise of the silver surfer

Director Tim Story′s original Fantastic Four movie received a critical crapping, and the second one is fairing no better. That’s not an indictment of his movies, it’s just the way things turn out. The Fantastic Four gets no respect for the same reason comedies don′t win Oscars and Michael Bay gets treated like the anti-christ. In their rush to justify their profession by setting film up as a penultimate art form, most critics have no room for movies as entertainment. Art they may be, but the ability to deliver pure, light-hearted fun is an underrated talent. It’s not as easy as it seems, and so many movies get it completely wrong. Say what you want about the Fantastic Four, but Tim Story′s movies get fun right.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is as energetic and full of pep as the original, and if you liked that one then you’re going to love this. These are men in tights after all, there’s nothing wrong with ditching the tears once in awhile for a simple romp through the clouds with a guy who can light himself on fire. That’s what Fantastic Four is all about and Rise of the Silver Surfer delivers in precisely the same way as the original by refusing to take itself too seriously.

Rise of the Silver Surfer isn′t a huge improvement, and it doesn′t even try to reinvent the wheel, but its minor upgrades here and there make a cumulative difference. For starters, there are much-improved special effects. The effects in the first one looked kind of cheap, probably because the studio was trying to keep the budget down. Since it ended up making crazy money at the box office and on DVD, FOX clearly had no problem springing for some better CGI this time around. The Silver Surfer is particularly cool, as is the new Fantastic Four plane that figures prominently in one action scene.

Star(s) to watch : Chris Evans (”Cellular”, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”) as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, Jessica Alba (”Sin City”, “Into the Blue”) as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Julian McMahon (”Premonition”) as Victor Von Doom/Dr. Doom, & Vanessa Minnillo as Johnny’s Wedding Date.

die hard, die hard 4, live free or die hard

Live Free or Die Hard (released as Die Hard 4.0 or Die Hard 4 outside North America and also known as Die Hard 4: Live Free or Die Hard) is a 2007 action film, and the fourth installment in the Die Hard series. The film was directed by Len Wiseman and stars Bruce Willis as John McClane, the protagonist of the first three films. Other cast members included Justin Long, Timothy Olyphant, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Maggie Q. The storyline takes place 19 years after the first film, and sees McClane face a gang of cyber terrorists. The film was based on the 1997 article “A Farewell to Arms” written for Wired magazine by John Carlin.

Bruce is up to the challenge in Live Free or Die Hard, and now his John McClane is a grizzled, bald, but still strikingly handsome man of fifty-two who sits in parking lots waiting to check up on his college coed daughter Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Now years later, Lucy has inherited her mother’s feistiness and her father’s cockiness, which is a surefire way of saying she has a date with the terrorists.

Live Free or Die Hard received generally positive reviews, earning a 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 69/100 from Metacritic and had total international box office gross receipts of $382.1 million. For the DVD release, 20th Century Fox pioneered a new kind of DRM that tries to weaken the incentives for consumers to learn how to rip discs by offering them a downloadable version with studio-imposed restrictions. The score for the film was released on July 2, 2007 and a video game has been proposed for the Xbox 360.
