His next film is titled You Don’t Mess with the Zohan and is written by three comedy greats: Knocked Up’s Judd Apatow, SNL’s Robert Smigel and Adam Sandler together. In it, Sandler plays an Israel Intelligence Agency operative, and he looks quite convincing, at least for a comedy.
In the summer of ‘08 movie, Sandler plays an Israeli counter-terrorist named Zohan, who has grown weary of fighting Arabs in the Middle East in “You Don’t Mess With The Zohan”. After faking his own death in a frenzied battle with a Palestinian terrorist named The Phantom (John Tuturro), Zohan moves to New York City to pursue his one true passion - hairstyling. He gets a job at a local salon and operates under the moniker of Scrappy Coco, where he becomes an instant hit with the geriatric female population of the Big Apple. Scrappy is loving his new life until some local Arabs recognize the former commando and take it upon themselves to expose the imposter.
Yes, Judd Apatow’s name is attached′he co-wrote the screenplay with Sandler’and Adam Sandler makes virtually nothing but hits. But who knows anything about the Israeli army? How many people will get what appear to be many jokes about the Israeli accent? People may have gone to see Sandler fake being gay with Kevin James last summer, but will they see him be a hairdresser now?
